Executive Director

The New Art Center is a nonprofit community art education space that offers everyone, at all levels of ability, exceptional opportunities to make, exhibit, view, think about and talk about art.
The Executive Director position requires a high energy, engaging and proactive problem solver to represent our organization in a professional manner.  In addition to exceptional attention to detail, this position:

  • Plans and identifies the priorities for fundraising in order to maintain and enhance the earned and philanthropic revenue for the organization.  
  • Reports to the Board of the New Art Center and provides executive leadership to all program and development staff. 
  • Oversees the personnel and planning for all NAC business departments, programs, and activities and will be charged with building a development strategy to augment the earned revenue.
  • In consultation with the Deputy Director, President, the Board, staff and other stakeholders, the Director will develop a long range vision and plan, including the establishment of clear goals and priorities for staff to achieve.
Position Details
In addition to having a dynamic, supportive, and friendly demeanor when interacting with our students, donors and suppliers, the Director will:
Lead and Convene
 
The Director will oversee the operations of the center by delegating the majority of the management and art programming responsibilities to the Deputy Director, with the exception of the Marketing & Development arms of the organization. The Director will actively partner with the Board as it addresses the long-term role and goals for NAC and the communities it serves. The Director will be responsible for engaging leaders of all arts organization to find ways to collaborate and support one another's growth and sustainability. The Director must bring enthusiastic, approachable charisma to the NAC and to the community. The Director must be able to perform the following essential functions:

3. Supports staff initiative and innovation; creates and maintains team/family atmosphere
4. With the support of the Deputy Director, oversees job responsibilities of staff
5. Demonstrates knowledge of non-profit management and the business of NAC
 
Plan and Think Strategically
1. Strong understanding of marketing and branding strategies that will facilitate the continual growth of the earned and unearned financial base
2. Works with the staff and board to grow support base, and develops a deeper penetration into the art community
2. Considers and facilitates ways to serve currently underserved populations
3. Enables staff and committees to evaluate and enhance current programs to meet on-going needs
4. Fosters a culture of innovation and risk-taking to create new, cutting edge programs and services that meet the needs of the current and next generation of art enthusiasts
5. Develops a strategic plan that captures the energy of NAC and positions it for success
 
Develop Financial Resources
  1. Works with senior staff and the Board to develop and implement an ongoing, comprehensive development strategy consisting of individual, corporate, and foundation support
  2. Holds primary responsibility for the development, writing, and tracking of all funding proposals
  3. Works with the Board to identify, cultivate, and solicit a full portfolio of prospects and donors
  4. Monitors all donor information, presenting statistical analysis and reports on progress to the Board
  5. Collaborates with staff and the Board to implement public events and programs designed to increase awareness, donor relations, and revenue
  6. Oversees a variety of fundraising and/or community events
  7. Develops and execute a stewardship program aimed at nurturing deeper ties with donors
  8. Researches funding sources and trends to help position NAC ahead of major funding changes or trends
Experience and Requirements
  • 5+ years of Executive Director/Development experience.
  • Requires excellent organizational and event management experience.
  • Excellent written and art skills a plus.

We have one of the few mid-sized nonprofit exhibition spaces in New England, and attract over 4,500 visitors annually. The New Art Center’s Curatorial Opportunity Program is well respected in New England’s visual arts community. While currently on hold, this program has been a unique vehicle for curators and artists to collaborate and present thoughtful, innovative concepts. It is one of our major goals to bring this exhibition program off hold.
